Javier Jiménez Rolo surprises with Saint Malo, an absolutely unexpected first album. The soundtrack of a journey that didn’t exist but feels powerful and exciting.

That Saint-Malo is a town in Brittany is the least of it. Even the fact that it exists is unimportant. Javier has never been there. Similarly, his album takes us to remote or not so remote places without moving from where we are. Javier composed these twelve songs between 2019 and 2021 from his room: “One of the problems with recording at home rather than in a studio is that when you move, your recording space changes too. In the case of this album, I was involved in three moves during its whole process. Trying to see the positive side of this situation, I realised that, as well as a collection of songs, it was a testimonial to the different places where I had lived during those years and their respective views: ‘Promenade’ is an imagined walk from an interior flat; ‘Picture In A Frame’ is a sunny afternoon in a park in Ciudad Lineal, Madrid, and ‘Bells Of Nowhere’ is a stroll through the neighbourhood that was once my grandparents’ and is now mine.”

It’s an eminently evocative album but also powerfully narrative, which moves through different emotional states. Along the way, references as heterogeneous as Javier’s own tastes come up. From the inevitable Arvo Pärt, Max Richter and Steve Reich to the more unsuspected Thom Yorke, Burial, Caribou, Vulfpeck or even Dua Lipa. Stéphane Grappelli, Andrew Bird, Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds or Rene Aubry are other names Javier mentions when he talks about something similar to influences.

The journey, because this is a journey to look out the window, one in which the songs miraculously fit with magical precision to the landscapes we are travelling through, begins with the promising ‘Beware Of The Dogs’ and ‘Maltravieso’. It is followed by the obsessive arpeggios of ‘Le Havre’ that give way to the luminous ‘Fields Of Gold’, the emotion of ‘Cais do Sodré’ and the passionate ‘Le pont roulant’, reminiscent of a restrained Alexandre Desplat. Along the way, dogs will bark, rain will fall on the ‘Promenade’ and the sun will come out with the perfectly playful ‘Dolce Far Niente’ (“a mix between elevator music and a song announcing the arrival of summer” according to Javier) in which echoes of Isao Tomita and Raymond Scott resound.

The result of this captivating, unexpected and suggestive mixture is Saint Malo, Javier Jiménez’s first album and the empirical demonstration that he does not have, despite his classical training, any red lines. “I’ve always flirted with jazz, with swing... Then I moved on to messing around with loops, to doing more ambient and experimental things. I also had my folkie phase with the klezmer group Barrunto Bellota Band... But I always try to avoid classical influences and making pirouettes that seem very obvious to me precisely because of where I come from. When you drop the constraints it’s all much more fun”.

There was still had a last-minute surprise in store: “Once I had finished mixing the tracks and was ready to hand them over for mastering, I somehow erased the entire album, completely. Composition, recording and production blends seamlessly in my workflow. Everything unfolds simultaneously. Reworking the songs led me to different outcomes compared to the lost tracks – sometimes with subtle nuances, other times with significant changes. After an initial moment of panic, I greatly enjoyed the process of re-recording because, although I knew the direction I was heading, I traversed some paths that I didn't recall having traveled before.”

In Saint Malo the melodies grow, become small, return and intertwine with loops and improbable aromas, to form an album that describes a journey through emotions. From melancholy to joy and the surprise of first discoveries. “The idea was for there to be a story. And it’s funny how when you make instrumental music, sometimes it takes you longer to figure out what you’re telling than it does the listener”.

Javier Jiménez Rolo sorprende con Saint Malo, un primer disco absolutamente inesperado. La banda sonora de un viaje que no existió pero que se siente poderoso y emocionante.

Que Saint-Malo sea una localidad situada en Bretaña es lo de menos. Incluso que exista carece de importancia. Javier nunca ha estado allí. Como su disco, que nos lleva a lugares remotos o no tanto sin movernos del sitio. Tiene sentido. Javier compuso estas doce canciones entre 2019 y 2021. Lo hizo desde su habitación: “Uno de los problemas de grabar en casa y no en un estudio es que cuando te mudas, tu espacio de grabación también cambia. En el caso de este disco, pasé por tres mudanzas durante todo su proceso. Intentando ver el lado positivo de esta situación, me di cuenta de que, además de una colección de canciones, era un testimonio de los diferentes lugares en los que había vivido durante esos años y sus respectivas vistas: ‘Promenade’ es un paseo imaginado desde un piso interior; ‘Picture In A Frame’ es una tarde soleada en un parque de Ciudad Lineal, en Madrid, y ‘Bells Of Nowhere’ es un recorrido por el barrio que un día fue de mis abuelos y ahora es mío”.

Es un disco eminentemente evocador pero también poderosamente narrativo, que transita por diversos estados emocionales. Por el camino se van asomando referencias tan heterogéneas como lo son los gustos del propio Javier. Desde los inevitables Arvo Pärt, Max Richter y Steve Reich pasando por los más insospechados Thom Yorke, Burial, Caribou, Vulfpeck o la mismísima Dua Lipa. Stéphane Grappelli, Andrew Bird, Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds o Rene Aubry son otros nombres que se le caen cuando no le queda más remedio que hablar de algo parecido a influencias.

El viaje, porque esto es un viaje de los de mirar por la ventanilla, uno en el que milagrosamente las canciones que van sonando se acoplan con mágica precisión a los paisajes que vamos recorriendo, se inicia con las prometedoras ’Beware Of The Dogs’ y ’Maltravieso’. Le siguen los obsesivos arpegios de ‘Le Havre’ que dan paso a la luminosa ’Fields Of Gold’, la emoción de ’Cais do Sodré’ y la apasionada ’Le pont roulant’, que recuerda a un contenido Alexandre Desplat. Durante el trayecto ladrarán los perros, lloverá ’Promenade’ y llegará el sol con la perfecta y juguetona ’Dolce far niente’ (“una mezcla entre música de ascensor y canción que anuncia la llegada del verano”) en la que resuenan ecos de Isao Tomita y Raymond Scott.

El resultado de esta cautivadora, inesperada y sugerente mixtura es Saint Malo, primer disco de Javier Jiménez y la demostración empírica de que si hay algo que no tiene Javier, a pesar de su formación clásica, son líneas rojas. “Siempre he coqueteado con el jazz, con el swing… Luego me pasé a cacharrear con loops, a hacer cosas más ambient y experimentales. También tuve mi etapa más folkie con el grupo klezmer Barrunto Bellota Band [premio Injuve 2011]… Pero siempre intento huir de la influencia clásica evitando hacer piruetas que me parecen muy obvias precisamente por mi formación. A ver, el corsé está y existe, pero cuando te lo quitas es todo mucho más divertido”.

Aún faltaba una sorpresa de última hora: “Cuando terminé de mezclar las pistas y estaba listo para masterizarlas, se borró todo el álbum por completo. La composición, la grabación y la producción se mezclan de forma natural en mi flujo de trabajo. Todo se desarrolla simultáneamente. Rehacer las canciones me llevó a resultados diferentes en comparación con las pistas perdidas, a veces con matices sutiles, otras veces con cambios significativos. Tras un momento inicial de pánico, disfruté mucho del proceso de regrabación porque, aunque sabía la dirección que quería tomar, recorrí algunos caminos que no recordaba haber transitado antes”.

En Saint Malo las melodías crecen, se hacen pequeñas, regresan y se entreveran con loops y aromas improbables para conformar un álbum que describe un viaje a través de las emociones. Desde la melancolía a la alegría, pasando por la sorpresa de los primeros descubrimientos. “La idea era que hubiera una historia. Y es curioso cómo cuando haces música instrumental, a veces tardas más tiempo tú en averiguar qué estás contando que el que lo escucha”. El inmenso poder de sugestión de la música.
